I'm looking at a 1979 17' reinell 140-4cyl right now and I just have a question. The guy said it was all rebuilt, and the lower unit is a new omc lower unit, but it's for a 6cyl, he was saying something about gearing and how a prop may fix the "problem". What is the problem? thanks.

Re: 140-4cyl omc

Keep looking.
The outdrive has the wrong gear ratio, and no amount of prop changes will get you the same effeciency, speed, etc that having the proper gear ratio will. If it did, the manufacturers wouldn't have different gear ratios, just a bigger selection of props.
OMC (Especially the striger drives like the one you mention) aren't built anymore, haven't been since the mid 80's. OMC itself went out of buisness about 10 years ago. But hey, with some careful searching you should be able to find parts, not sure about someone to rebuild the drive for you, but that is the problem with Edsels & DeSoto's, fun to look at, just not fun to buy parts for.

He is talking about the Lower Unit being replaced. Isn't it the Upper that has the Gear Ratio's? Or are there Gear Ratio's in both the Top and Bottom that need to matched up?
