I just got this motor from a friend and it hast been run in 6 years. I got it started fine it runs great at top speed. Water pump is working great.

Only problem is when I lower the throttle it dies. I tried adjusting the idle a bit and it helped some but I cant even slow down enough to change from forward to neutral then to reverse, it dies before I can get there. Makes for a really hard time in a crowded restaraunt slip. :)

Could this be a carb issue? fuel pump? what would be a good starting point?

Oh yeah, one more question... How do I know if the motor is capable of charging the battery?

I'd give the carb a good going-over, especially seeing as the motor sat for 6 years. The idle circuit's probably full of gunk. That's where I'd be looking first.

As far as a charging system, look for a rectifier mounted to the side of the motor. If it doesn't have one, it's not going to charge a battery. And if it's not electric start, it's not going to have one...

It is electric start. I think the best thing for me to do to start is get hte service manual for it. :) Only issue I have is that there is a big lake party this weekend and I'd like to not fight the motor the whole time. I'm going to call some outboard repair places on Monday and see if they can give it a tune up before the weekend.

I dont see anything resembling a rectifier on the motor. is it possible to add one or do I need to start looking at solar panels?

It would probably have a charge coil under the flywheel if it's an electric start. I'd use a garden tractor battery in it since you don't need a huge battery to turn it over.
