Hey all,

Got a shiny new marine starter. Much different, smaller and lighter than the old but seemed to bolt up fine.

'89 4.3L OMC --
Doug russell listed the original part no. as 984456, and current no. 3855177.
The starter I purchased was id'd as part 3855177, also replacing 984456.

Upon re-installation - turned the key and only got a click.
The solenoid on the starter is giving me nothing. The assist solenoid on the back of the motor clicks.

Both 50A fuses are good, 20A ignition fuse on the dash is good.

We're lost.

Any ideas?

What is the battery voltage? Are you getting 12+ volts to the solenoid? Are the small terminals on the sol showing voltage?

Re: OMC 4.3 - New starter, no start

figured it out.

For future searches...

The solenoid on the new starter was rotated about 180 deg. relative to the old starter solenoid.
It is obvious where the batt (+) attaches, and the 2 large terminal wires that go with it, but there are two small studs, each with one wire connected -- because of the changed orientation - those wires have to swap sides.

It fired right up - even being an old, fogged engine.
