Hi I'm not too knowledgable on outboards so here goes. First is there supposed to be a little play in the prop? I can move it about an inch back and forth. Second, what is the best gear oil to use and how often should you change it. And finally does anyone know if there is some kind of alternator you can install on this motor? Charging the batteries before everytime i go fishing is getting annoying. The motor is a 2002 mercury 90hp 3 cylinder, oil injected. Thanks for any help.

Yes there should be some play.

I change mine every year but thats just me. you should inspect every year.

And why do you charge the battery every time you go out?

When you say back and forth, do you mean fwd-aft? A little play that way is normal, but an inch sounds like a lot. I would pull the prop, check to make sure you have all the correct prop hardware, and make sure the prop nut is tight.

Merc hi-perf. gear lube is the stuff, and change it at the end of every season.

The motor has a charging system that should be adequate to keep a starting battery charged, provided the battery is in good shape, and used for starting the engine and powering a few basic accessories (bilge pump, nav light, fish finder), not to run a trolling motor.
