I picked up my boat from outside winter storage and noticed oil was leaking out of my exhaust/ prop. When I winterized it I had check the oil and no water at that time. I pulled the lower drain plug and mostly water came out with a little black oil and what looks like brass filings.

For some reason things just don't seem right and now I'm wondering if someone has played the swap game with my gear case.

How hard/ technical is it to remove a gear case on the motor? Is it just four bolts and it drops out?

Ok, aside from those thoughts, Is there a chance the water did not drain or rain water could have caused this?? What is confusing is the oil I drained with the filings in it, I have never seen this with this motor when I have checked the oil at the end of the year for water.

What price range am I looking at to repair this?

If a person was in a hurry, he could swap a lower in about 15 minutes. But why. It would be quicker to remove one and run. Why put another back on.

The drives are designed to live IN the water, so rain will not leak in. If it does, then the seals are seriously dead. And for an 02 lower, that doesn't even sound possible unless you have a couple thousand hours on it.

This is why you CHANGE the gear lube during winterization, not just check it.

Price range depends on what is actually wrong, and there is no brass in the drive.

I agree most theives would not go through the trouble of reinstalling the damaged one unless it was the boat yard I stored my boat at.

Ok, is there a SN number on the gear case I could match to the motor? This would prove it is my mistake if the numbers match. I just find it hard to believe no water in the fall and a pint in the spring knowing it did not see water after I checked it.

One thing I did notice was the motor was trimmed up alittle. Could rain water have filled the exhaust and frozen during the winter cracking the housing?
