Default 1989 Mariner 40 re-starting problems

Hello from London England-just found your excellent forum and hope you guys might be able to help me with my trusty old Mariner 40.

After a run of around 1/2 hour on say 3/4 throttle I'll stop for a few minutes to drift over a fishing spot and then have trouble restarting. To get it to start I have to take the cover off and hold open the throttle while I turn the engine over-once she starts again she runs fine. Re-starting after a long spell at anchor doesn't usually cause a problem. Have renewed the fuel bulb this season.

Any ideas would be greatlt appreciated.

Thanks Mozza

sounds like maybe the float needle value is not sealing completely and flooding the engine. having to hold the plate open gives it more air, and it starts. like the older autos, that when flooded you hold the accelorator to the floor, when starting. this keeps the valve open so it gets more air, and doesn't pump in more fuel. sitting allows the excess fuel to evaporate.

When you restart, don't use any choke, it probably already has enough gas. If it still doesn't start, tilt the motor all the way up and drain out the excess gas from the carbs. Perhaps your carb float is stuck open. How long since the last carb rebuild?? jeff
