Default Lower Drive oil 55hp Evinrude

I have a 55 hp Evinrude M# 55973A, Serial# J05689 with electric shift. What kind of oil do I need in lower drive. Gear oil on the back of the bottles say, on elctric shift use Dextron II or III. Does my Model need 80/90 or Dextron. Also what year is this motor. 1973 ???

You have a 1969 model number which came with electric shift. The Gearcase takes 23.5 ounces of BRP/OMC Premium Blend Gearcase Lube or Dextron

Dextron is a "If Premium Blend Is Not Available" choice. They have to say that or give you the oil free. Note: Premium Blend IS available.

Ok, I'm a little confused. I have this same motor and after I got it I just grabbed something of the self that said Lower Gear Lube. I look last night ant it said GL-5 or CL-5 (it was dark in the garage). I still have shift issues, but I do have some better used solinoids to put in this year.

I read in another thread about using Type-C lube?

Is Dextron II or Dextron III not Transmission Fluid like you use in automobiles?

Can someone clear this up for me?

Standard gear lube is 75-90 weight and much too high a viscosity for your gearcase.

Get the Bombardier/OMC/BRP Premium Blend for your gearcase or you won't need to worry about it much longer.

Put the proper oil in your gearcase and your shifting problems may just go away. Why would you not use the right stuff?

I'm fixin'to (Texas term) replace my electric transmission solenoids with some better used ones and I was wondering how much cleaning I need to do down in there? Just wipe out with Dextron or would some steel wool or something be usefull in being sure we have smooth movement of the solenoids?

I went to my local out door store and found some type 'C' gear lube, but it said do not use in OMC electric tran, but use Dextron II printed right there on the bottle.

If I can't find any OMC Super Blend, I may have to use Dextron. All I found on the net wanted $12 to ship one quart of Super Blend!. I hate paying high shipping. I have found one OMC dealer nearby and see if they have any.

Texmill, I ran across this thread while researching somthing else - its a few months old at this point, but just in case you are watching, go to your local BRP/OMC dealer and buy BRP Premium Blend. That is the modern equivalent for "Type C" oil.
