Will controls from a 40hp work with a 70hp ?

1982 Bass Tracker TX 17 with 40 hp Johnson 2 cyl (CMC tilt plate as motor has no t/t)
I would like to put a 1996 70hp Johnson on the boat 3 cyl (meets the boats ratings). I was wondering if this was a problem with the controls ?

the shift and throttle cables should work, may have to get the adapter for the wiring harness. you can almost by new controls for the cost of the adapter. the 40 has the big red plug on the harness, i think the 96 has the new plug. just check.

Thanks, my 40 has the "red" plug and the (I was wrong it's a '98 70hp ) has a different plug for the wire harness.

Is there a way I can post a picture to show my question ?
