At what temp should the thermostat open on a 1968/69 Chrysler 35hp model 3551?
The one in it (which I don?t have a clue how old it is) starts to open at 150 degrees.

I haven?t found a parts place that carries Chrysler parts beyond 1970. Some of the ones for the 1970 35hp look close but I cant find any sites with the dimensions of the thermostat. The one I have now has no numbers on it. Its dimensions are
1 ?? length X 1-3/32? Dia. at its widest point. The block opening or block seat is 1-1/8? Dia.

Re: Chrysler thermostat

A thermostat from late 70 will fit that motor and will be the same tstat that the 45 and 55 hp motors use. Original chrysler number was 97068-1. Merc number is 895338 which replaced the original and costs $16.13. If you are going to do it get the grommet 25-F97504 ($1.45) and the cover gasket 27-819377 ($1.29). All parts can be ordered from your local Mercury parts dealer or mercury express online.

Re: Chrysler thermostat

Thanks eurolarva and byacey.
I have found the #895338-2, which says it?s a 3/4" thermostat

Would it hurt to drop the opening temp to 130 or 140?

Thanks..
