1964 mercury won't reverse

I have a 1964 mercury 100 horsepower, that will not go into reverse and will not stay started if anyone can help me figure out this problem i would really appreciate it. thank you so much!!:

You may have a bad clutch dog or twisted upper shift shaft, you will have to drop the unit to tell
