Default Mercury voltage regulator smoking

I was running down the lake yesterday when I noticed that the voltage gauge was reading 12.3 volts.
Today I pulled the cover and hooked up the flush hose, started the motor and noticed smoke coming from the back of the voltage regulator.
I pulled the regulator off and the back is burnt, has the stater spiked and burnt it up or has the regulator just quit?
The motor is a 2000 90hp mercury 4 stroke.
Also does all dealers sell parts at list or does anybody know a dealer that discounts these things ( cost 350.00)
Can anybody help....Thanks Clinton.

Maybe you can get one cheaper thru a Yamaha dealer.

Yamaha built the power head but not the electronics, yamaha only lists 2 regulators and they are nothing like mine.

That's correct; VR's fail all the time (just replaced two of mine over the past two weeks). Also, the Stator could be your problem, but not necessarily. A bad ground or a burnt wire grounding on the power head will fry a VR quickly. The cheapest place I've found to purchase is http://www.outboardignition.com.

Hopefully this helps.
