You have a bad ground or a bad black box looking device. The black wire to the kill switches is the ground. The black wire with the yellow stripe is the kill wire. To kill the motor, the kill switches connect the black to the balck/yellow. If the black is badly grounded, it won't kill. If there is a problem with the black/yellow circuit in the black box looking device, it won't kill. Poor running could also be caused by either problem. If cleaning and tightening the ground connection(s) doesn't fix it, I'd look into replacing the switchbox (black box).
