Hi. New to the board.
After running fine since i bought it about 10 years ago, I 've run into something strange. Motor ran fine all day yesterday until suddenly I couldnt get the boat up on plane anymore. Seemed like I'd lost the top half of its speed. Now the funny part.......both kill switches no longer funtion either !!! Whatever has gone wrong, its caused both of these conditions. i had to disconnect the gas tank and wait for the motor to die. What the heck happenned ? I notice the wires from both kill switches going into some "black box" looking device. I have no idea what that is. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

You have a bad ground or a bad black box looking device. The black wire to the kill switches is the ground. The black wire with the yellow stripe is the kill wire. To kill the motor, the kill switches connect the black to the balck/yellow. If the black is badly grounded, it won't kill. If there is a problem with the black/yellow circuit in the black box looking device, it won't kill. Poor running could also be caused by either problem. If cleaning and tightening the ground connection(s) doesn't fix it, I'd look into replacing the switchbox (black box).

Disconnect the black/yellow wire from the box and test run the engine we have seen many where the kill switch in the handle was shorted out, some won't run at all and some miss and sputter
