Default 1960 75 HP Evinrude Compression Help

Hi guys!
I did a compression test on my 1960 75 HP Evinrude V-4. I have 65 lbs in cyl. 1&3 and 55 lbs. in cyl. 2&4.

The motor has not run in 13 years or so and I am trying to decide whether or not too fix this motor up, so I started with the compression test. I pulled the heads off and cleaned the cylinders up and the tops of the pistons, there are a few scores in the walls and some rust corrosion from being exposed by a previous owner.

I put the heads back on with old gaskets just to get an idea on the compression. They seated well when I torqued them down. ( I have two new gaskets for it waiting) Is it worth it to put the new gaskets on, clean the carbs out and rebuild the water pump etc, and try to fire it up based on the compression test?

Thanks for the help!

Remove the bypass port covers from the sides and check the rings for being stuck. They probably are. You can also see the other sides of the pistons through the exhaust ports under the cover between the V. Guessing you are looking at a complete teardown.

Is that considered low compression for the motor? I do not have a reference chart. The pistons move freely, I am not thinking the rings are stuck...And I do not know if they will seat anymore seeing the age of the motor and how much they have expanded allready.

I am trying to get away without a complete rebuild due to parts availability...

Yes, that's low. Why don't you think the rings are stuck? It's not a matter of expanding or seating. They are stuck in the grooves from carbon and /or rust. God knows it's old enough. But wishful thinking is OK, I guess. Good luck.....
