1972 40hp Evinrude Help please

Hi,

I'm restoring a 16ft fishing/reccie boat and have just obtained a 1972 40hp evinrude engine however with no manual (its on order) I have some questions:
1. with no knowledge of outboard is it two stroke and if so what is the ratio (we only have unleaded in the UK)
2. I'd like to install remotes for it...I have a dual control box with cables (came with the boat seems generic), so was wondering if I can buy the connectors that connect the cables to throttle and gear
3. How can i test it (at the moment checked spark and compression seems quite good) its cable pull so i gather i need to get some clamps for the water intake and obviously the petrol...is there anything else???

Welcome to iboats, the remote controls, are specific for several brands of engine. the OMC, evinrude,johnson, gale. work on those engines. the merc, mariner, and some force use a different control. it's way the insides are made to work with the particular engines.

need the model number to determine if it is manual shift or hydro electric, as this is a big point in the controls. model number should be on the transom mount.


fuel/oil ratio is 50/1 87 octane unleaded gas is best. you have to convert to liters.

Hose attachments for out-of-water testing are about rare as chicken fangs. Just put it in a barrel of water, but make sure it is deep enough. The water pump needs to be submerged. It is in the first bulge above the flat anti-cavitation plate.

A 1972 wouldn't be electric shift.

Yes, the fuel ratio is 50:1

Brilliant thanks for your help!!...the model number is 40203 and I believe the remote controls are OMC (will double check)...i think its all manual shift as are the controls (ie cable based)....
