Default Lower Unit mercury 1967 950SS

I am not sure if I should start a new thread?

Current issue/problem:

Everything was going fine until I struggled with the shift shaft alignment.

After several tries making sure the upper and lower shaft were connecting, I
kept having problems testing the gear shift. It won't come out of forward?

I noticed that when the lower unit was off that the shaft will rotate left/right.

Before attempting again, is there a way to make sure the shaft is in the right gear position? ie. should I rotate the shaft all the way counterclockwise or clockwise?

Thanks for helping.

If you rotate the shaft with a pair of pliers you will find that there are 3 detent positions find rev that is the place the prop shaft is locked both ways, then put the engine rev. in gear and install the unit

Hello,

I finally got everything together and got to the point to start.

I have a flush device connected and ran the motor.

I am only seeing a trickle of water come out?

I assume this is not good. ANY ADVICE?

THANKS

It is coming out of the water hose in the cowling. This is where it has always been coming out.
