I have a 3.7L MCM 170 with freshwater cooling. I leak antifreeze and I cant figure out from where. I can't find any leaks after running it. The res. is at a normal level. Could it be the heat exchanger?

Re: Coolant Leak

P.S. It's a rather slow leak. It's fine if I just add some before I launch every time I go out.

Yes your heat exchanger can have an internal leak....
A pressure test will tell you.....;)

Re: Coolant Leak

I've been trought this with my 3.7 . i am willing to bet that the seals on the water pump are leaking. check the weap hole its on the lower right side of the timing cover.

Re: Coolant Leak

well i could ruin it if you overheat it. If your waterpump seals are the problem its only going to get worse sooner or later maybe even next time you go out the seal could just go out and then you will not be able to cool the engine. so you would be dead in the water. i would confirm the problem. From what i've heard this is a fairly common problem with the 3.7 and unless your pretty good with a wrench i would take it to a shop. when i replaced the ones on mine i had to pull the flywheel, impeller cover, impeller, and timing cover since the freshwater pump is made into the timing cover. there are 2 seals inthere both go on the end of the camshaft. when the first one goes out the water is directed out the weep hole and when the second one goes out the water will make it into your oilpan. the weep hole is there as a warning that the seal is going bad. Ohio huh my gators are gonna own yall in both sports now:)

Re: Coolant Leak

Thanks a ton for this info. I have the motor on a motor stand right now and i have the service manual. I'm also quite good w/ a wrench. Now that you mentioned it, When I drained the oil, there was about a shot glass amount of water in the oil. I guess i'll be replacing those seals and for the heck of it i'll replace the timing chain too. I ended up re-timing the motor like 5 times last season so my guess is theres tons of slack in the chain? Thanks again, you a life saver.
