Changing grease type

I have read that if I change grease base type I should clean all the old out of the hub as well as repacking the bearings.

Are we talking about just dry cloth cleaning or using some sort of solvent.

What solvent would I use ?

I ended up with a different base type on each side of my trailer and currently use 2 grease guns which is twice the slime.

Re: Changing grease type

You need to clean the old stuff out. I used brake cleaner when I ran into this and dried it with compressed air. Didn't know what grease previous owner used so I cleaned the old out and replaced.

Got some brake cleaner on the shelf but would never have thought of it.

Thanks

I soak the bearings in lacquer thinner and then blow them out with compressed air. Don't let them spin with the compressed air. That will damage the bearings.
