Mid Section

On my 1985 115 Evinrude I noticed that there is a small hole at the bottom of the mid section where it meets the lower unit. This hole is at the back of the mid section in the transom direction. I noticed this hole the other day when I saw some water draining out and some unburned two cycle, is this hole supposed to be there or could it been caused by corrosion? What I think is a bit odd about it is the hole is not perfectly round and I cannot see any need for a drain hole there.
Any help would be great.
