Last time out while running at speed.
The ammeter dropped to discharge range.
It had been up around 30A +.

When I got home the V reg.had softened up in the back.
This is the one that mounts on the therm housing.
Prestolite # vsh6201afy.
I have done a search online for this # and got nothing.

I'm not opposed to changing the alt. to a self regulated model if possible.
The alt. has a red wire term.(fused) and a term on the top(of the back). The V. reg has a yellow ,purple and black wires.
Can anyone supply me with a alt/v reg supplier or
the best course to take for this system.
I ran her last week on the hose, and all seemed well.
Checked th volts and amps.
Should this motor run without the battery hooked up...
it doesn't

Thanks for all advise

You might check with the local alternator re-build shops to see if they have a retrofit.

pretty sure I have one of those regulators at home - will check and get back to you. But if it had your poor ol' alternator up at 30+A (and probably way more) I wonder what all got fried....did the battery survive?
sounds like maybe the dying regulator full fielded the alternator which killed the alternator (overheated itself trying to put out full current full time).

Re: 75 OMC charging system

thanks for the replies,
Sorry I'm just getting back. (Working all the time.)

kjd, I don,t think there was any other damage.
All seemed good when I ran her in the yard.

There is a large load with the key on (before starting)
when I hook the battery up. Large spark.
Can this be because of the V. reg?

Any answer about this motor running with the battery dissconnected?
I thought they only need the bat. when starting.

Thanks
WK
