Default ? on alarm on 96 200 mariner efi

had an alarm start while idling and turned the motor off and started again and the alarm started sounding, checked the water from the tail tale and it was fine and checked the oil reservoir and it was fine. I loaded back up and brought home to check some more and found the wire that connects to the bottom of the water/fuel separator had come off. Would this make the alarm to sound?

What was the alarm doing. Steady beep, intermittent beep. If intermittent, how many beeps and how long between?

There really isn't an alarm that should sound like that. 4 beeps and a pause for a couple of minutes and beep again can be caused by low oil, or water in the fuel.
A single long continous beep is overheat.
It could also be one of the sensors going bad or the wiring.
The wire on the fuel filter is for water detection, and being unhooked would eliminate it as the cause.
