I'm painting my outboard and I'm wondering is there any special way to remove decals?

Also, being from California, I can't find zinc chromate primer anywhere for the lower unit. West Marine carries, but it's not available in Calif. Is there any alternative or can anybody tell me where I can get some?

I don't know if they can sell to California, but iboats offers aluminum primer. Go to the Marine Store tab and use Tempo Paint in a search.

Decals remove with a strong hairdryer. Residual adhesive can be removed with mineral sprirts. Any scraping should be done with a plastic putty knife.

The best color match is with Factory paint. If you can still get your colors, you'd be happier with the result. Otherwise Tempo paints are okay.

If you want a high quality finish don't use rattle can paint - a good quality automotive spray will give you a more durable finish.
