I have a 1990 evenrude 115 that skips in and out of gear at some speeds. Can I fill the lower unit with heavy lube as a temp fix until I get a new engine?...Ed

Re: Clutch dog chattering

have you tried to adjust your control cables. 17 year old cables streach. disconnect cable and shift manually and see if it will stay in gear. when putting in gear, it is a quick thrust, not the slow, let's listen to the clogs interlock. the slow shift is part of what wears the edges of the dog off. the are very square gears. lube won't fix it. you can rebuild the lower unit.

You can try heavy gear lube and even add some sawdust.

But the answer is NO ! It will only get worse, until it doesn't work at all.

Hey DHP. Don't laugh, my first truck was a '47 Chev and I bought it in about '59. Don't know if you were there or not but those were the days when you had to do a valve job at 45k and a complete overhaul at 100k.

When I bought it I was a stupid kid but I did know to change the oil. The stuff in there was black and so thick you could almost cut it with a knife.

Got her home, changed the oil and you'd have thought I was going to set the thing on fire. Oil smoke everywhere. Just like you said it will only get worse till it just quits. It did. Obviously they saw me coming.
