is this how you decarb with seafoam?

hi,

I'm planning to decarb my "new" outboard, 84 evinrude 90 hp with vro. I've read some posts here. I'll summary the steps I think I should do(I think I'll use the reg. seafoam and not the spray), any advice/comments is appreciated. thanks.

1. mix 1 can of seafoam with 1 gal. of gas in a seperate tank(let's call it the mixture tank). I'm just wondering if I'm mixing too much seafoam here, I think instruction calls for 1 oz per gal or so.

2. bring motor up to operating tem. using regular gas tank.

3. disconnect fuel line from regular tank and connect it to the mixture tank.

4. run motor for about 10 minutes, adjust throttle to prevent her from dying.

5. shut her down and let it sit for about 30 minutes.

6. run her again with regular tank and watch for gunk/smoke.
how do I know if I should repeat with the mixture tank, what are the tell tale signs? thanks

Never used Seafoam to decarb so but if that's the instructions off the container, then you should be doing it right.

Take a set of compression readings before the decarb and then again after. Do the test with the engine temp near the same on both accounts.

Are you just doing a decarb as PM (preventive maint.) or is there other reasons?

not as a preventive maintaince but to get the gunk out. I just got the motor not long ago and I don't think the previous owner(s) has decarbed it.

Don't forget that you have to add TCW-3 oil to your mix.

thanks ezeke, but I acutually read that article prior to posting here. that's why my steps are similar to his. The part of the article that confused me is where he talked about connecting the "tempo" tank to the "water separating fuel filter", or the prime bulb. Is he talking about actually connecting the engine to two tanks simultaneous ? although I couldn't imagine he'd do so.

also I was wondering if mixing the whole can of seafoam in just 1 gal. of gas would hurt anything or not? thanks

it probably won't hurt anything, but is that enough gas to stay started?

You don't run two tanks simultaneously. Just make sure that if the VRO is not functional, that you mix outboard oil in the decarb tank. As for how you know the process worked -- if it still smokes after the 30 minute sit time and a little bit of run time, repeat the process. If it still smokes repeat again. Rarely will you have to do more than three enemas. Just alert the neighbors and inform them what you are doing so they don't call the fire dept. d
