Replacing the starter on an old outboard

I have an 84 90hp Seahorse that the starter is going out on. (I think) It still starts fine, but it makes a high pitched whining noise when it doesn't start. Is this the starter going out? It looks like it'd be real easy to replace, is it? Also, any recommendations on where to buy a new starter if this is indeed going out? Thanks for the help.

Try putting some WD 40 on the bendix, it just may be the bedix not reaching the flywheel. Spay it and work it by hand up and down some to help work the oil in. After you have done that, a few drops of motor oil on the bedix shaft will keep it lubed up

Don't get carried away with the WD-40. Just a few drops on the bendix and work it up and down usually does the trick. To much and it could get down into the rubber clutch of the bendix and start slipping.

Once it starts to engage all the time, apply some bendix grease or other light lube to the bendix shaft. Should take care of the problem and keep it healthy.

if the starter is going, use the yellow pages, and find a starter/altenator/generator, shop in your area. most can rebuild the starters for far less than a new one..
