1972 Evinrude 9.5 HP won't tilt

Just bought a old 9.5 Evinrude-runs great but can't get to tilt. Afraid to pull hard on anything-might break. How do I release ?

there should be a release lever on the front of the engine, near the transom clamps. if it will not release, sometimes the trim pin gets bent. just release the trim pin and pull out. then straighten. also could be broken cable on the release mech. make sure it's in neutral.

The 9.5 needs to be in neutral or forward to tilt. Shift into forward to give max clearance to all the tilt mechanisms.

come to think of it . . .

I'm pretty sure the 9.5s need to be in forward to tilt. Neutral won't cut it.

I'd rather skip the hand-slapping and proceed straight on to the round-buying if its all the same to you.

If it won't tilt in forward gear, the release could be messed up. Check to see if the claw fingers are releasing from the tilt adjusting pin.

Actually, it should tilt in neutral also, if adjusted properly. There is a little lever on the shift linkage that gets bent easy and throws it off. OR, you may have some busted rubber motor mounts which will throw the geometry off. Broken mounts are very common on that motor, being one of the most often things to go wrong..
