I bought this as a project and so far so good..........

I have it on a stand and have the lower unit off the motor....

I got everthing on the power head going. I started it. It was fogged before I got it. It started and smoked like a forest fire.....

It fires and goes. I am using a heavy oil-gas mixture for the wake up. I got it to fire off and run. Fire breifly shot out the area where the lower unit attaches. Alot of heat came from the exhaust area. The mid section heated up so hot I could not hold my hand on the mid section. I could put my hand on the powerhead where it has "V6" in the casting...... It was run about 60 sec total. Its 45 degrees outside.

Is this normal......what do I need to look at or do to help it.

I guess I would call that normal for a water cooled engine with no water cooling it.

Yep, get the lower end and some muffs on it. Dangerous for the motors health not to.
