Hi all, I'm new to this forum. Searched the list and didn't find any clues to my issue yet. Have a new to me Mercury two stroke triple, presume it is a 50 or 60 Hp on a Whaler Dauntless. Boat is '95 vintage, understand the motor was rebuilt and possibly a bit older. Appears the serial # tag on the frame was sprayed over as the entire motor was repainted, so I don't know how to ID the motor. If I try to use some paint remover on the SN tag, will I also remove the SN?

It runs great but appears to be putting out about 16 volts during operation at speed. The boat has a Garmin fish finder that signals overvoltage and shuts down. Presume there is either a voltage regulator or some sort of rectifier that has gone bad.

I'd like to purchase a repair manual and fix this myself. Can anyone suggest a way to ID the motor and effect a repair. I'm in Jacksonville, Fl. If anyone can recommend a good mechanic / shop for parts and guidance, I'd certainly appreciate it.

Thanks, MW

The engine probable has a rectifier (3 posts) instead of a voltage regulator (5 wires) they will interchange easily with minor wiring changes

There should be a welch plug on the powerhead with the serial number stamped in it.
