Well, my Chaparral with a 3.0 mercruiser got burned. It seemed useless after the fire, but some guy tells me that the fiber can be repaired (will not look so nice any more). I trust this because this guys work really well with fiberglass. The engine is another thing. They tell me that it can work, that I would have to re-do all the electrical wiring, etc. but the engine they say it's good. All the sterndrive (?) (well, the part that goes in the water with the propeller, here we call it the "leg") is in perfect condition. The question: do you think it's worth it to try to repair the engine ? do you think it will end up ok. ? The fire was put out in about 10 minutes, so I think the engine didn't suffer too much heat...Please, I will apreciate your advice...Thanks a lot.

Re: Mercruiser 3.0 on fire

Welcome to iboats....:)
Impossible to say without seeing the extent of the damage.......
There is really only one way to find out & that is to repair what obviously needs repairing & go from there....
I would want to figure out what caused the fire initially, if possible.....
Myself, I don't think I would be comfortable in a boat that had 'cooked'.....JK

Sell it on ebay. You can advertise the boat as "smokin hot!" or "all fired up!"

ja,ja,ja...that's a good idea !! rubberfrog.

it burned because they didn't vent the fumes before starting up. The fiberglass seem to be in good condition (what's left of it).

Who is they?
Where were the fumes coming from & what provided the spark to ignite said fumes?....
Sounds like this engine had some issues....
Did you buy this boat after the fact?

Re: Mercruiser 3.0 on fire

they...a guy that was in charge of the boat and a friend of his.

it seems he didn't start the ventilator before startup, and some spark ignited it, and he opened the engine cover when he heard and then it ignited really strong...(well, he did everything he shouldn´t have).

No, this was my dads boat. The issue is that I work in a conservation organization (www.equilibrioazul.org) and we desperately need a boat since a while ago...so I am trying to rebuild this one..but I am not sure..that is why I am asking you guys...

thanks a lot...

Can you post some pics of the damage? It would be a great help in determining the repair options.
