CD 18 5 1/2hp 1962..has Champ RJ12C in it. Right or wrong? And is this the year to still stick with 24-1 oil? Thanks (neighbor selling to another neighbor, and just want to make sure...somehow I always end up in the middle)

Champion J4C is the correct plug. Gap at .030"

Yes, 24:1 is correct for 1962.

Well, I do agree with the 24:1 fuel/oil mix.

The spark plug chart I have recommends a Champion J6C set at .030.

I'll double check tomorrow when I get to the shop and post what I find.

Just a few years ago, Champion strangely changed their recommendations (with OMCs blessings) for most motors that originally specified the J4s to RJ12s. Why change now? J4s worked for decades and they still work today. 32:1 with any outboard oil should work fine. 24:1 using originally recommended crankcase oil fouls plugs, and is a bit richer than necessary for modern outboard oil. If you do go 24:1, stick with the hotter RJ12s to avoid fouling. But then, outboard oils don't foul nearly as readily as crankcase oil did.

( If it was mine, 32:1 with J6Cs. )

Good answers all. Think I will just send it off between the two (runs fine in my bucket), recommend the heavier oil, and I'll look at the plugs myself later. Solid little workhorse, even though it says Seahorse! Thanks.. 8)
