I've just bought an old 4.5 hp Johnson on Ebay. Apparently it needed an impeller. I pulled the propeller off and then the two bolts that hold the drive shaft into the gear case. Now I'm trying to put it back together, but it's constantly in gear. I can't get it to go into neutral or reverse (this is the first outboard I've pulled apart). The gear shaft is working well, but it doesn't come into contact with the drive shaft when fitted. It's like it needs a spacer, but there wasn't one when I pulled it apart. I'm sure it's something very simple, but my head is about to implode. Any help would be great. If it helps the numbers on the ID plate are J5BALCSS 665800.
