Removed lower end to check water pump, but shift shaft pulled out and stayed with upper spline union,I read in earlier post that it is possible to reinsurt with out ripping gearcase apart but first shift shaft bushing needs to be removed, I took out the two little bolts but it won't budge and seems it could be broken easily.I read that it unscrewes but can't see how possible. Also the two parts at the upper shaft spline look as if they would push the shaft down as it turns, I thought shifting was done by turning the shaft. Any help greatly needed :'(Mariner 60 hp #l-31348

Re: shift shaft problems

There is a special tool that will remove the bushing. You can pick one up for about 17 bucks.

Re: shift shaft problems

Wish you luck but on most Mercs in the mid ranges that I know of, shifting is done by rotating a cam with the shift shaft which is splined.

The cam sits right in front of the center of the propshaft in the lower unit and against it is a hollow pointed pin which is spring loaded and operates the clutch dog.....actual shift mechanism.

You may get the bushing out but stabbing the cam, due to the spring pressure on it may be a real problem.

Maybe a professional mechanic who knows how to snag it (if it can be snagged) will respond and lead you through the process.

Re: shift shaft problems

Mark,

I think he is referring to that thread where someone said that they would rotate the prop shaft (while in forward gear) to pull back the spring. It has to be done just before the "click" and the spring returns. I guess it was possible to reseat the shift cam if the spring was depressed far enough.

Re: shift shaft problems

I can see dowm the shaft seal hole and with the prop shaft spun just before it clicks I see something sliding back and forth it looks like the cap to a ball point pen. can't see anywhere a spline would engage.

still trying ro istall shift rod. Removed bushing to get a better look, but can't seem to see the shift cam. The Plunger will slide back and forth When the pressure is removed by turning the prop shaft (before the click). Could the cam be stuck forward of the plunger or could it just have fallen out of place? pic included of what I see
