My 1985 50 hp evinrude seems to be (click click click) under the flywheel when i turn the key to try and start the motor. What could cause this? I have put a new starter and solenoid on,but didn't fix problem.

starter solenoid?
maybe bad battery connections
maybe bad starter wire
maybe bad starter ground

Re: 1985 50hp evinrude ignition problem

does the starter turn over or not at all?
if not

check for fully charged battery
all good cables and connectors
clean grounds and tight.

if all looks good and you cant find the problem,
jump the starter directly to see if the starter is ok.

if the starter turns over you have either a bad solenoid or bad connections.

Re: 1985 50hp evinrude ignition problem

Thanks for the responses. I will give all those ideas a try. I replaced the starter and solenoid because they were still original parts and felt it was time to do so anyway. When I shut the motor off in the river and it wouldn't restart ,it just prompted me to go ahead and get r done.
