Hey everyone, looks like a great forum. I just bought an 89" Tracker 20' pontoon boat with a 110hp Evinrude. The warning horn keeps going off on me as soon as I start it and pull it of the trailer. It's a beep---beep about every 1 second. The water pump pressure is from 5-20 psi, and there is water coming out of the pee hole. From what I have read, It sounds like an oil problem. I used to race 2 stroke dirt bikes, and never trusted the auto oil injecting. Is there a way to bypass the VRO and just do premix?

Re: 89

The urgent beep your getting is the "NO or Restricted" oil flow. Not a good thing. Does it still sound after the engine runs for a couple minutes or does it sounds constantly? If it sounds constantly, premix the fuel until you can find the problem with the pump.

Is the the original pump? Would there be a tag on the VRO pump saying "VRO2"?

Couple things to do/try....before starting the engine, squeeze the oil primer bulb. This will make sure you have oil to the pump. If the alarm still sounds, squeeze the bulb and see if the alarm clears. If you can not get the alarm to clear and stay off, the pump may be shot.

If you can get the alarm to clear and stay off......

If the hose to the engine from the oil reservoir is hard and has lost its plyability, replace it. Same with the oil lines to the VRO pump inside the engine pan. Replace any that are hard and also replace the snap clamps.

Remove the oil reservoir and clean it out and replace the filter sock. If unsure of when the reservoir was last cleaned out, do this and refill with fresh oil, TCW-3 rated.

There are a lot of views on the pumps and many that have either replaced the pump with a new pump which are much more reliable than the old ones or have disconnected the oil and just use the fuel end of the pump either because they didn't want to spend the money or just for peace of mind. You would of course have to premix the fuel.

(VRO Changeover Judgement Call)
(J. Reeves)

The VROs first came out in 1984 and have been upgraded quite a few times. In my opinion, back around 1988, they had perfected them but I think that they were upgraded even more since then. As long as the warning system is operating as it should, I feel quite at ease with them.

Some boaters have voiced their thoughts such as "What if that overpriced plastic horn should fail while I'm under way for some reason, and the VRO decides to fail five minutes later?" Obviously that would result in a big problem which really brings their fears into view.

The word "ease" is the key word though. If one has the slightest feeling of being ill at ease with that setup, then they should take the route they feel more at ease with. A judgement call each individual would need to make on their own.

(VRO Pump Conversion To Straight Fuel Pump)
(J. Reeves)

You can convert the VRO pump into a straight fuel pump, eliminating the oil tank and VRO pump warning system, but retain the overheat warning setup by doing the following:

1 - Cut and plug the oil line at the engine so that the oil side of the VRO pump will not draw air into its system. Trace the wires from the back of the VRO to its rubber plug (electrical plug) and disconnect it.

2 - Trace the two wires from the oil tank to the engine, disconnect those two wires, then remove them and the oil tank.

3 - Mix the 50/1 oil in the proper amount with whatever quanity fuel you have. Disconnect the fuel line at the engine. Pump the fuel primer bulb until fuel exits that hose with the tint of whatever oil you used. Reconnect the fuel hose.

That's it. If you want to test the heat warning system to ease your mind, have the key in the on position, then ground out the tan heat sensor wire that you'll find protruding from the cylinder head. The warning horn should sound off.

Re: 89

Thanks for the quick answers. I pulled off the cover today, and it does have a VRO2. This weekend I will go through it and check everything you guys recomended. Just to be on the safe side, I will premix 50:1 before I go out to the lake.

Thanks Again,

Brock
