I bought the boat to modify into a Bay / Ocean fishing only boat
While i was inspecting the boat to see if the new seats looked good i found a few soft spots on the floor, i proceeded to tear the floor out and found soaked foam
Looks like the stringers are fiberglass (very surprised)
ok so heres what i have to work with.

Picked up this boat for $500 it runs and works:

Looks like all is well :

Well think again:

It would have worked as is but i don't mind a small winter project.

I want to put these seats in:

Remove the cushions here and install casting deck and (bass boat) style seat. I will make include trap doors in place of seats for storage:

ill also be redoing the console with black plexy glass and other odds and ends looking to get her done within 45days.

Last and not least the sides of the boat shake violently when i push on them , remember the hull and stringers are fine mabe the console wood is long gone but it really looks like it has no rigidity.

that's total typical of an older unmaintained bayliner. everything is probably rotten, the stringers are wood, covered with glass, drill into them and they are probably gone also, along with the transom. double the plywood where the seats are going to go. an 18x18 laminate under the floor.

Ayuh,.......... Ya Better Keep Diggin',............

I know you haven't found the end of the Rot.......

Like TD says,.... The Stringers were Wood under that Glass,.....
And, I'd bet that the old Consoles on both sides of the boat are No longer connected to the Rest of the Hull at their bottoms..... That's Why the hull is So Weak,+ Shakes.....

If you're going for a purely fishing boat, you may want to think about going center console. W/ one seat behind the console and a bench behind that. Remove the front benches, raise the front deck about 6" or so and put in some hatches for under-floor storage.

That'd make for a nice fishing rig, at least that's what I'd do.

From what I can see in the pictures, I have to agree with Bondo's assessment. Especially the part about the consoles not supporting the hull as they should due to rotten floor.

Baylines just like yours make great rebuild projects. Seems they didn't seal the stringers and floor too well, but made a solid hull. Go to shareaproject.com and read the project by Realgun. Project Long Haul
His bayliner is a lot like yours. Realgun did a complete stringer and floor replacement, post seats instead of bench, and other mods. Should be very interesting reading for you.

i was toying with the idea of using an old whaler center console i had laying around and cutting out the consoles but it seems that those consoles are a major part of the bayliner design for side to side rigidity

i think you're in for a complete rebuild, separate the hull and deck. $500, you got what you paid for, but it can be brought back.

Heres what ive accomplished today
i drilled 5 holes along the stringers and found dry wood :)
removed the wood along the consoles
removed the bench seats
removed all soaked foam
it appears that this rebuild will go faster than i thought

ill get pics up tonight

The consuls arent as rigid as you think. Take a divider from under them out and they flop. Once the cushions are off you could cut them out no problem. I bet removing them and raising the bow spot to a flat casting platform would actually make it MORE rigid.

I have my 89 19' Capri apart now and found out how flimsy the cockpit area IS.

Yeah, that's my take on it too. Consoles aren't really all that structurally significant. Surely a solid stretch of plywood all the way across a few inches higher than the floor is now would strengthen it up more.

i like the idea of the front deck and a single counsel, doubles and center counsels seem like the would take up too much space IMHO.

I was able to remove the rest of the rotten floor and prep the hull for the new 3/4" ply

Re: 84 Bayliner Capri; Replace floor and Redesign cockpit need ideas

Took her out today with 4 friends for the first time....YAY

Clocked 42mph on the hand held gps.

It was quickly observed that this hull is not a fishing hull.... the deep v is great for waves but not so good for leaning over the side.

The low speed jets made light - mid throttle very choppy so a carb rebuild will be in order.

other then that I'm satisfied
