If it is a long shaft, it will have a 5-inch extension bolted between the exhaust housing and the lower unit housing.

It left the factory as a short shaft. But it may have been converted since then. If it is long shaft it will have an unmistakable 5" spacer between the lower unit gearcase and midsection.

measure from where it sits on the transom to the bottom flat plate. measure your transom. had a '55 15 rude short shaft measured 18" +- i put a piece of 3/4 under the transom clamp to raise it on a 16 " transom.

Thank you guys! I've been told that FROM THE TOP OF THE STAND (transom) TO THE FIN ABOVE THE PROP IS ABOUT 19 INCHES. I now need to go measure my transom and do the math, might need to add a piece of 3/4 as suggested.
Thanks again,
Charlie

Sounds like a long shaft but as stated there will be a very obvious 5 inch extension in there if it is a long shaft.

the best advice i can give you, is take it for a spin, check for the clutch dog, banging, it will feel like you hit a log, and a loud klunk. here's a link for carb adjustments for that engine, it's the bottom 1/2 2 knob settings. they will make it purr.
