Is it true that a pinion in the starter wears of or free rotates so that it the engine does not crank?? I was told that this is a fairly common problem and it is better to change it as part of yearly maintenance. Thanks

It sounded wierd, that's why I asked. I had my motor winterized last year in a shop and the owner told me this. I was to change it this year but I decided to do the winterizing myself (to much $$$) and change the impeller.

Keep the shaft and pinion clean with WD-40 and if possible lubricate every 30-60 days with light oil. OMC had a starter bendix lube part # 337016.

I use light machine oil and several people here have said they use sewing machine oil. Whatever you use, you don't want anything gummy on the shaft.
