Default 1987 Evinrude V4 140. Water leak.

This appears to be a replacement power head. There are no numbers on the Transom mount but the Power head numbers say it is a 1987.Clean water leaking from the cavity in the adapter plate where the swivel mount fork bolts in. This prompted me to remove the power head. This revealed the need to have some minor welding done at the front bolt holes of the adapter plate. Removed the adapter plate and had it welded. Leveled the plate and refitted using silicon sealant. Leveled both the head bottom and the adapter plate and refitted with new gasket and Silicon. I have now repeated the leveling and measured the location of the sealing surfaces three times, used up three gaskets and I still get a small dribble from the cavity. I dont see any cracks any where.
The motor cools ok and water comes from the tell tale.
I am tempted to let it be and run it.
Would greatly appreciate your opinions.:|

Booooo on silicon. No place on an engine for the stuff James. You should be using a gasket sealing compound instead.

Can you see just where the leak is? Are you sure the weld isn't leaking? If it's a mating surface where the silicon is, I'd bet that's the problem.

Thanks for the responses guys.
I have to admit that this is the first time I have tried silicon sealant on an OMC and you're probably right.

The numbers stamped into the core plug at top center rear of the motor say E140TXCUA G1461139.
according to BRP that makes it a 1987 motor.
Thanks again for your input.
If you have anymore please come back.
