mecury 650 1964 cable hook up

i just bought this boat i test drove it, the engine run great, but the throttle cables need replaced.
it mercury 650 1964 or 1965 four cycle striaght.
it has two cables first goes to the magneto/ throttle , the other one is for warm up lever.

my problem i can't get hooked up, bought to new cables telefex 650a's which all the material says they are the ticket ( the right one)

i have my throttle box in netural( level striaght Up) and can attach to the motor.

first question dose this motor have reverse?
the propper will only rotate clock wise on the motor, so i moved the dis/ magneto which moves the butterflys on the carbs even more open but dosen't cahnge it the reverse.... that is if the engine has reverse at all?

where would i start to hook up these cables ....wright the way
dose the warm gear changer gears to reverse?
or dose just do nothing other then advance the throttle to warm the engine without it be in gear?

i read to book i bought and ask many people hopfully some can tell where to start , a book , a person in westerville ohio that works on old engines

You are confused about the cables. One cable operates the throttle. The other is the shift cable (forward-neutral-reverse). Disconnect both cables at the engine. Have someone move the throttle lever slightly forward while you watch both cables. The first one to move is the shift cable. It attaches to the shift lever. The other cable attaches to the throttle/spark advance lever.

so, i should be able to shift the motor manual using there shift lever on the motor( no cables hooked up) and find netural if this holds true. ...... in which the propper with rotate in either direction, clock wise and c..clockwise.

In neutral the prop will spin freely in either direction. The shift linkage on the engine will move to three positions. F-N-R. Move the linkage all the way in either direction. Then move it back one position to the center. That will be neutral. Remember that you need to properly adjust the trunion (the threaded barrel) on the cable before attaching the cable. This applies to both the throttle and shift cable. With the shift linkage in neutral and the lever on the control box in neutral, hold the end of the cable up to the attachment point on the linkage. If they two do no line up exactly, rotate the trunion to bring the cable end and linkage attachment points into alignment. Do not push or pull on anything. If you have to move the linkage to make the connection you are doing it wrong. Repeat the process on the throttle linkage. Make sure the throttle linkage on the engine is fully against the idle stop and hold it there when aligning the cable. Adjust the same way as the shift cable. When you are done, move the throttle lever fully open and look at the throttle plates in the carb. They should be perfectly parallel to the throttle bore. If not, you need to do a link& sink and you need a manual for that. The prop should also be in gear at this point. If it still spins free, there is a shift linkage problem.

ok , i had the correct cables to corect spot and the engine was in netural and the control box in netural.
i adjust barrel nuts and attached then...... so everthing was installed proper spin both direction engine in netural.....i beleive.

next i tried it out the control level from netural to forward and more it to full throttle.. all the way down or forward the barrells at the cabs full index....so everthing when well to i tried to move the control handle back to netural
would in guage back into netural... adjust a little bit forward ok.... still with not go back to neutralor reverse ( a lot of tension.

question with engine off and sparks in should one be able to shift manually from f-n-r gears with engine off?

what do think the problem is?

cable are detached now , i can get the engine to shift any more.

does the dist head/ throttle have to be fully index to the idle stop srcew to the the engine change gear?

You should always turn the propeller when you attempt to shift WITHOUT the engine running. Engaging forward and reverse is similar to a manual transmission in a car. Sometimes you can shift into any gear without the engine running and sometimes you can't. It depends on how the gears are aligned whent then engine stopped. In an outboard, the gear selection occurs when clutch dogs engage. If the clutch dog is not aligned with the the notches on the mating gear it cannot engage. Turn the prop a little and it will engage. When engaged, you should not be able to turn the prop.

so, when the boat gets into netural and the control box is in netural ( handle at 12 high) , i will not be able to shift the engine and control box once completely hook up through the grears without the engine running or the prop being turned?

That's not what I said. I said "sometimes" the engine stops at exactly the right point where the gears in the lower unit will not allow you shift (forward or reverse) with the engine off. Sometimes it will shift just fine. It doesn't make any difference if the cables are hooked up or not. Its simply how the gears in the lower unit stopped. Turning the prop helps get the clutch dogs aligned so it can be shifted. When the engine is running you will hear a slight clunk or a ratcheting sound as you shift. That's the clutch dogs trying to engage.
