Up or down?

We just bought a houseboat. We went this week to see it & complete the deal. The I/O is a Penta 6 cyl. diesel. It's in the water. I noticed the drive is down, not raised up, out of the lake. Whats best for boats that live in the water, up or down? Is there undue stress on the cylinders/hyd in the up position?

Leave it down. It's easier on the bellows, It doesn't come clear out of the water anyway, and if you forget to put it down and start the engine you destroy a lot of very expensive parts.

Ayuh,............

Being Down also helps to keep the Muskrats from sinking their Teeth into the Bellows as well........
