Compatible Years with 1986 Johnson 40hp lower unit?

Greetings all! Wish I was coming here on a better note but unfortunately I had a run in with a submerged log while duck hunting last week and have done the lower unit bad. The housing is in good shape, no noticeable cracks or bends. The prop won't turn, unless under pressure it will skip a few teeth on the gear. I can still shift through the gears without any troubles. With that limited amount of information, anyone have a diagnosis?

A little more info, the motor is a 1986 Johnson E40ELCDE tiller. I figure I better start looking for parts, can someone tell what model years (and hp) are compatible with this series of motor?

You may have just spun the prop. Take the propeller off and see if the propeller shaft is still functioning properly.

We pulled the prop once we got it on the trailer and the shaft itself wouldn't move either. If I in fact "spun the prop" would that mean that the teeth on the prop shaft were stripped?

The prop is designed to break the rubber core within it when it strikes an object, absorbing the shock and protecting the gears. If it fails to do that then yes, it could break the gears.

Unless you want to do the work yourself, I would try to find a parts motor or another gearcase from a salvage yard or Ebay.

If you check the BRP parts manuals for your motor, you can get the parts numbers as well as the number for the gearcase assembly.

There is one on e-bay right now. You can call and ask them if it fits a 1986.
