Starting an old Mercury 200 HP

I have come across a 1987 Mercury 200 HP outboard. It has been sitting for several years without being run. What steps should I take to avoid damaging it to test start it? Thanks

there are several post in this link. awakening a sleeping out board, engien won't start.
