Ben, I'm assuming that your boat is aluminum. The very short version is that you can scuff up the surface and repaint, if it's in good condition. If not, you'll have to sand it down, prime with a zinc chromate primer, then paint it.

Do a search here on "painting aluminum boat" and you'll find everything you need, and then some.

Good Luck
Rick

OK, let's try that again. Should've read the subject line of Ben's post more carefully.... Sorry about that. Do the search, Ben, you'll find everything you'll need to know, including the ol' roll 'n tip method of painting. Done right, you'll think it was sprayed.

Yea its aluminum. What kind of paint i did the search could'nt really find anything. I want the least amount of prep work i've heard about self leveling primer and stuff. What kind and type is that?

booboo, i did a 14' fisherman a while back, all i did was lightly sand with a palm sander, wash it good, and use the 99cent home depot spray enamel. inside and out was less than $30.00. exterior red/white, interior gray. here's a pic.

Ben,

The finished product you get will depend on the amount of prep you put into it, and the quality of materials. Without knowing the actual condition of your boat, or the kind of finish you want when it's done, it'd be difficult to give you a good answer.

As far as paint goes, any paint will work, but again, it all depends on what you want when you're done.

For brands, I use HMG. I feel it goes on easier than Petit or Interlux, is cheaper, and has a nicer finish. If you want the absolute best, then go with AWL Grip. For a middle of the road paint, try Rustoleum's marine paint.

3 years. exterior looked like new, interior had some wear marks, but the touch up was simple. i did scratch the exterior on a stump, but a little spray and it disappeared.
