I have a '78 model Johnson 70 hp. It has setp for about 2 years. The starter will engage the flywheel and the flywheel will turn a little bit, then stop. The starter gear stays engaged, but the starter shaft keeps spinning. I have to disengage the starter gear by hand and retry. I removed the plugs and sparayed some Marvel mystery oil inside. With the plugs removed, the flywheel turns easy, but with plugs in, there is much more resistance. need help. Thanks.

Sounds like you need a new bendix they probably have them here at iboats.Otherwise a starter repair shop, NAPA or E/J dealer. If there is an excesive amount of oil it may not be able to crank over.

I had a very similar thing happen to me on a 79' Johnson 140 HP. The starter had to be replaced, once I did that it was good to go.

Good luck. By the way, the starters are not cheap on those. I was looking at 220 for a new one. OUCH!!

I got mine on eBay for about 70 rebuilt.

I put the new one on and it works great. Engine started right up after 2 years sitting. Thanks.
