Someone told me recently that my '04 Yamaha 90 4-stroke is really 100 horse under the cowl.

Is this true? And if so, why so modest, Yamaha?

Many makers share common real estate, under the cowl, with different HP ratings.

That may be true, for your Yam. If the spec's say the displacement is the same, they are similar.

Trying to change it is a whole nuther matter. It's not easy, or worth it, in most instances.

Sorry -- shoulda been more clear. I don't mean why are there Mercs running around with the same block, but rather why is it that Yamaha used to sell this identical motor with 100 hp on the cowl and now sells this motor with 90 hp on the cowl?

I would have thought they'd want to post the bigger numbers a) because if it's true, then why not say it, and b) so as to cater to the human male's "bigger is better" gene.
