My 65 HP appears to be overcharging. I toasted a Garmin Depth Sounder. I installed an extra Garmin 240 DS that has a voltage readout and noticed it went from 12.5V to 16.8V after about 5 minutes of running the engine. The engine runs perfectly. I don't have the knowlegde or equipment to test the Stator but does it sount like this is the problem? This is a great forum. I appreciate any feedback I can get!

What you are seeing is normal for the unregulated alternators such as on your motor. I'm sort of surprised that Garmin apparently did not build in some sort of protection against it, since it is so common. Or maybe they do and that wasn't really the reason for failure.
