Volvo Penta fuel filters - are they also a water separator?

Hi,

I've got a '96 V/P 4.3L GL. This has a spin on fuel filter attached at the base of the electric fuel pump. I've used the same part number Volvo filter when I've changed it in the past. Unfortunately, I thought of this question after I sealed the boat up for the winter this afternoon so I don't have that part number. I think that it is 3862228.

Is it possible to get a good quality water separator/fuel filter in a spin on unit that would work in place of the current (I'm assuming here) fuel only Volvo filter.

I can't really find a good spot for an aftermarket housing so I'd like to use a single unit to handle everything.

Any thoughts?

Cool, thanks for the data, Don.

When you wrote 'little' did you mean that it is too small to be useful or just that its a nice sized filter compared to the other aftermarket units?

Thanks,

johnbo

Probably just sized a wee bit different so you have to continue buying their filters at twice the price of generic8)

The Fuel Filters supplied by the Manufacturer Is Fine,.....
It IS a Water Seperating Filter.....
If you get Water in your Fuel,..... It'll Shut you Down,.... As it Should.....

The Difference between a Factory Filter,+ some Aftermarket Filters,.....
Might be a Drain on the Bottom,........
But,......
IF you've got Enough Water to Have to Drain It,........
You Should be Replacing it Anyways........

No they work fine, if you see a small amount of water in the filter (Tablespoon or so) when you change it, that will probably be just the condenstation inside the tank. If it's got a lot of water in it, then it's time to pump the water out of the tank and find out how it got in there.
