Formula vs. Checkmate

Hey, I am thinking about selling my 1986 Formula 242LS with a 260 MerCruiser. Reason? Although its in mint condition for its age, its slower than dirt. I can just about get 45mph out of her at 4200rpm. I've thought about upgrading the engine to a 454 big block, but its costly because the Alpha can't handle the engine. So, I got a line on a 1996 Checkmate 24' Convensor with a 502MPI/Bravo One. The owner swears it does 70. I'd be happy with 55.

So here is my question. Could the Formula ever be upgraded to get 60mph out of her. I've read that although well built, older Formulas are heavy and usually underpowered. So, not worth it to upgrade engines.

Guys, thanks for your thoughts and cheers from Seattle, WA

Alan - welcome aboard iboats. I have a tendency to agree with the "underpowered" statement. I had some buddies with the same vintage (when they were NEW) and they complained about the same thing. Boats were real lookers, but they just didn't move like they thought they would. Alphas top out at less than 300HP, so hopping up the engine wouldn't be an option without changing the drive, too. The checkmate's power package seems more conducive to the go-fast proposition.

Re: Formula vs. Checkmate

Thanks for the links and responses. I looked at some other forums and confirmed my suspicions. To take my heavy 1986 242LS (love the styling) to more of a performance boat means going to a big block/Bravo setup. Big bucks even for remanufactured items. Then i may get 55 out of it. So, the Checkmate is looking lots better. Its weight is 800 lbs lighter than the Formula. The newer Checkmate will get me to where i want for less money. So, I'll leave the old gal setup like she is for the crowd looking for style and idling speeds.

Guys thanks again, wanted to share a pic of my Formula. Shes a great ole gal, I'll leave her as is and try out the CHeckmate tomorrow, or perhaps a newer Formula. Cheers
