Default painting aluminum boats

I have a al. boat that came from the factory painted in some areas. It looks bad now so what is the best way to go about repainting it?

I painted my Lund. Sanded all the old flakey paint off to bare metal. Then I went to an auto paint store and bought base + clearcoat car paint and the etching primer they recommended. Did it following instructions and it's dang near bulletproof. But you gotta follow the instructions or you will waste a lot of money. That stuff is expensive! And follow safety warnings too. That stuff is dangerous, that is why some places only sell it to pros.

Do this.

1, If the old paint is still adhering in areas, leave it where it is still there. Scuff it up with 220 grit (wet).

2. Any bare spots, also scuff with 220-wet.

3. Wash the whole boat with 50/50 solution of vinegar and water.

4. Prime the bare areas with Zinc Chromate primer.

5. Apply top coat.

I use Interlux or Pettit products for the Zinc and topcoat. I prefer the Interlux or Pettit one part epoxy paints. They are a little more difficult to work with but they dry very hard and durable.

See the link below. That is one of my projects.

This is an old thread, but I just wanted to say that was a HECK OF A RESTORATION DJ.

Did you keep that boat or did you sell it? Did you log hours on how much time you put into it?

Ryan.
