Fellow boaters,
I have a low compression cylinder (from 4). It can be any of: Broken Ring, Bad Valve, Carbon residue, Bad gasket, Not smooth cylinder...).
Can anybody help with a link/resource on a step by step process to find the problem? With such process, I can start from easiest step and if it was negative, then move on to the next step. I dont like to start by disassembling power head.

Thanks
nozar

You seem to be asking alot, but we do like to help.

Can you tell us what engine you have ?

Dissassembly may be the only way.

Can't you do a leakdown test on an outboard?

Re: Narrowing down

its simple.

as you stated, it is either bad rings, bent or burnt valve, or a hole in your piston (not probable, but possible)

if it was a blown headgasket, you would surely hear it.

dump about 2 tablespoons of 30 or 40 weight oil into the cylinder and check it again. if the compression goes up, its the rings, if it doesnt, its the valves.

two cycles are eaiser, its the rings,. hehehe
