Ok, I almost have my merc running... its a 79' 40hp 500 series that sat in my nieghbors back yard for 5 years untill i took it off of his hands this summer. after replacing the starter and the water pump and the wiring harness then rebuilding the carb, i finally have it to the point where the starter will turn the flyweel at an acceptable rate of speed and it will sputter for a second. I have excellent compression, great spark, clean fuel lines, clean jets and no sticky seat or float. Also from the wiring diagram i have it seems i have all my wires back in thier proper place. so... my question is... what remains?

You might carefully spray a little fuel mix directly into the carbs.
I always thought the 500s were all 50 hp??

Thanks guys... the thing that advances the trigger around underneath the flywheel was stuck... a little WD40 on the spring and it swings freely now. now i just have to get the throttle cables adjusted so that i can rev past 2500rpm.
